List of "pagan" things JW's allow
by problemaddict 2 inwhat i'm looking for specifically is things that are "pagan" in the sense they predate christianity (or i guess judiasm to cover the ole mosaic code), that jw's allow or do.
the ones that come to mind are below.. rings - rings seem to originate in egypt.
for wedding ceremonies it became a symbol of "ownership" in rome.. pinatas - looks like possibly it originated in china as a part of the new year and a request for luck, and catholics later turned it into a beating of temptation type thing.. anything else?.

Anyone want to help me with this? What I'm looking for specifically is things that are "pagan" in the sense they predate Christianity (or I guess Judiasm to cover the ole mosaic code), that JW's allow or do. the ones that come to mind are below.

(I would have added human sacrifice, but specifically I am using this to be able to point out specific inconsistencies and that argument may not be appreciated by my audience)

Today's Text - Shun Your Disfellowshipped Family Members & Friends!
by Divergent inyet another sickening reminder for jw's to use emotional blackmail!.
wednesday, june 22. stop keeping company with anyone called a brother who is sexually immoral.—1 cor.
5:11.. a heartrending experience for aaron’s family is recorded at leviticus 10:1-11. they must have been devastated when fire from heaven consumed aaron’s sons nadab and abihu at the tabernacle.

What is interestib to me, is they are certaimly making a push for people to shun properly. Meaning it must be a problem and possibly in their minds is causing those people to not come back.
They have however also lightly pointed to faders, as potential shun targets. Not directly......but its there. So the way this is starting to go in the minds of the rsnk and file is to shun df'd ones (no brainer), but to ALSO shun those that SHOULD be df'd (in their minds). Meaning the ones that dont go bu they would say "know better". Or the ones that are off the radar but may celebrate a birthday.

Why Are You Here?
by Believer ini'm wondering why believers remain members of this forum which is clearly hostile to believers.
as one member said, nonbelievers pounce on any semblance of belief like piranhas on prey.
as former jws we should have had our fill of judgmental know-it-alls, but here we are.

I am not much of a believer recently, but I am still finding my way. I would encourage you to think of things a little more openly. Conversation is just conversation. What makes the conversation hostile....that it is in opposition to how you think and feel?
The time where people could not think differently about of a variety of subject and coexist was a dark time in my life in retrospect.......you see where I'm going here.

"Confidentiality" of Elders!
by stuckinarut2 insomething struck me the other day.. elders are told to maintain confidentiality with regard to the details of judicial cases or congregation "discipline" in an attempt to dignify individuals etc.. this is even the case for known child abusers!.
yet, if they suspect someone of being an "apostate", for instance being a member on this forum, they will spread such information far and wide, through the witness "grape vine" to congregations miles away (or even in other countries).
so, does that mean they place more importance on "apostasy" rather than child abuse?.

Elder confidentiality is an oxymoron.
Certainly in practice these guys by and large can't be trusted to not talk to their wives and children about little suzie or brother jimmy's indiscretions. However even the ones that aren't prone to being gossiping children, find themselves systemically contributing to this. How?
When someone is accused of something, or a rumor is floated, or someone might have said something negative, someone might have had too much beer.......you name it......they NEVER encourage the person complaining to apply matthew 5 and talk to the person. They ALWAYS bring this info up at the elder meeting, and brothers are assigned to speak to the person. Lets say it was completely false. Does it matter? No the entire body has already heard the accusation,a nd follow up is scant or "bro ___ accepted the counsel with humility". If you argue accuracy, its not like its reported...."we were wrong, should have encouraged the 2 grown ass people to speak to each other, its our bad".
Nope.....elders can slander others to other elders with impugnity.
Anyone serving probably has heard the phrase...
Elder to elder.

Warwick, Queensland, Australia: Elders covered up rape of young girl

What is "digitally raped"? Or am I missing something.
this quote is especially damning...
Barrister Robbie Davies told the court the girl, who was not even a teenager at the time, reported the abuse to the church three years later, in 2002, and they "made their own inquiries".
As a result, Harvey was "ostracised" from the church for three years but the matter was not reported to police.

Maybe we should resurrect the "interview with an apostate" template for the people coming in. I kind of liked that!
